Where does Lomi Lomi come from?

Lomi Lomi is a native Hawaiian relaxing massage. Traditionally, it was therapeutic and was performed by healers and priests, so-called kahunas. In its traditional form, the massage was performed on a stone altar in a temple and could even last for several days. Originally, Lomi Lomi was a ritual dedicated to spiritual cleansing and ensuring inner balance. People received a massage in important moments of their lives, for example before making a major decision.

Lomi Lomi massage is performed mainly with forearms and palms using a massage oil. A masseuse treats the whole body: feet, calves, thighs, the sides of the buttocks, stomach, back, palms, forearms, arms, cleavage, back of the neck, neck, head and face. Where did you learn Lomi Lomi?

I finished the Integrate Lomilomi advanced course at the Centre for Polynesian Healing Arts in Budapest. It’s a school founded by Witold Kucharczyk, a wonderful teacher and person. The course comprised of four levels, 160 hours in total, the majority of which was practical classes. Additionally we learned basic hula dance, breathing techniques and huna rules. I mastered various techniques during the course: hot stone Lomi Lomi massage, massaging customers that have clothes on, the rituals of letting go and many more.

Are private body parts treated during a massage session?

No, they are not. I do not massage genitals or breasts. Your private parts are covered with a pareo. However, I do massage the sides of the buttocks and this is why I encourage you to take off your underwear. This doesn’t have any sexual innuendo – it’s just because many movements are done alongside the whole body, from the feet to the head. Your chest is uncovered but if you prefer, I can cover your breasts with pareo, too.

How to prepare for a massage?

It is recommended not to eat substantial meals and not to drink a lot of water before the session. If you are hungry or thirsty before the massage, it is best to satisfy those needs, but choose something smaller and lighter.

What does a session involve?

I start with a conversation over a cup of tea. I ask you how you feel, if you have any ailments, problems with your spine or injuries. I also ask if you have any specific expectations. Next, I start the massage lasting 90 or 120 minutes. After the session, if you need it, you can lie on the warm table for a while, drink some tea or discuss your feelings. It is worth accounting for some extra time rather than just for the duration of your session.

Yes, it certainly can. Lomi Lomi is a relaxing, minimally invasive massage adapted to individual needs. It helps relieve ailments common in pregnant women, such as pain, swelling and fatigue. It soothes the nerves, gives you a sensation of balance, peace and trust. It is recommended especially in the last trimester or even around the due date, because a relaxed body, trusting yourself and dealing with fear contributes to a successful delivery.

I read that Lomi Lomi is a massage performed with intention. What does it mean?

By intention I mean a request, a desire or a plan. If you want something important very much, it is worth thinking about it before, during and after the massage. Similarly, if you don’t want something anymore, want to let go of your past and change something, it is good to allow yourself to do that during your session. Lomi Lomi massage provides deep relaxation and enables us to connect with ourselves, our truth and our internal life. Even if the intention is not precisely specified, I encourage you to observe yourself – your thoughts and feelings can reveal it to you.

I am self-conscious about certain parts of my body. How can I overcome it?

You don’t need to worry about any of your body parts that are imperfect in your view. The idea of Lomi Lomi massage is for you to feel divinely in your body – whatever it looks like at a given time. I accept you for who you are, with all your imperfections, qualities and flaws. Does music play during the session?

Yes, each massage is accompanied by relaxation music, mainly Hawaiian. I move around the table to the rhythm of the music for almost the entire session. I use the steps from hula dance for it. This is why I have a pareo tied around my waist – it reminds me of the dance.

Do you massage only women?

I massage both men and women. Age, sex, appearance, personality or characteristics of a person who comes to the studio don’t matter to me. I welcome everyone with acceptance, trust and gratitude.

Why is breathing so important during the session?

The deeper we breathe, the more we feel. During your massage you may feel a lot o things. Deep breath helps you embrace them, release them from the body and express them. It also makes it easier to relax – especially breathing out is helpful in reducing body tension.

What does it mean that emotions are written in our body?

Every emotion is necessary for us. Pleasant feelings, such as peace, intimacy or trust, provide us with the sense of security and teach us to love and develop. However, fear and anger also help us – they protect us from danger and inform about unsatisfied needs. Unfortunately, we rarely express our feelings. We tend to suppress and hide them. When we experience sad emotions, our muscles become tense, we hunch, our throat closes, we get arm and stomach pain. Even if the stressful situation ends, the tensions remain. The easiest way to relieve them is through sport, massage and touch. If we don’t systematically relax our body, the tensions build up and we don’t function well.

What kind of feelings may be released during the massage and how to handle them?

Your massage may evoke all the suppressed, unexpressed, contained emotions. It is worth to allow yourself to feel each of them. Feel free to cry or laugh out loud during your session – I accept that. You can also tell me that you’re about to cry or that your throat is closing. If during the massage you feel pleasant and want to exhale or hum, you don’t have to be shy. You can tell me you feel wonderful. However, if you don’t feel ready to express yourself during the session, allow yourself to do this at home. It is not a rule that the massage will release your feelings. It can also just be an extraordinary relaxation and rest.
